Rest Illustrated

With rest comes the precious occurence of spontaneous creativity.

I was armed with my journal and 5 colored fine-liners this holiday on the island of Zanzibar and the result was a re-discovered craving to illustrate and pen down my thoughts and mental imagery (also known as imagination ;)

There's nothing like travelling and the surrounding of a new place, culture, people and setting that takes you to new perspectives. Breaking away from the familiar is so necessary in releasing creativity. Here are some of my scribbles and illustrations...

Awakening...2011

There's something magical about journalling, that expands further than just the necessity of writing one's thoughts and keeping a diary of daily reflections. Journalling, allows us to look back and see on paper the journey of life. The coincidences that really aren't random, the thoughts that start as idea's and a few weeks later change the way you see and live, the warnings you feel in your spirit that you quickly jot down and a few days later it's the exact wisdom you needed in the struggle you faced. There are so many small, 'insignificant', unnoticed miracles and moments of wisdom we receive in our ordinary day to day - somehow journalling captures them before their leave our fleeting memories.

Obviously it would be painful and unnecessary to capture every moment and thought on paper...but there are some penned down moments in my journals that I'm so grateful for! Writing my thoughts down has become something I do because it keeps reminding me of the significance of all we see and go through, even my random imaginary thoughts...they can have purpose. Some of my journal pages are tattered because one simple line from a journal entry has kept me inspired and helped me understand that there's Someone bigger leading my thoughts and guiding me on the path ahead.

Here's a recent example I'd like to share...

At the beginning of my holiday road trip to Zanzibar I started a new journal, and headed it 'Awakening'. I felt at the begninning of my travels God was stirring the expectation to awaken dreams long forgotten and new life He wants to establish in me every day...

To top it all off, the very last journal entry to my holiday happened on the first day of 2011, in the plane on our way home. As we descended into Joburg, home, the new year...the sun was beginning to rise. As though God had known from the beginning of the holiday, my very first day of 2011 would be from the air, flying through the sky with the most beautiful, up front and tightly knit hug with the rising sun... here's my last holiday journal entry on the first day of the 2011...

My penned down thoughts at the beginning of the holiday and then again at the end met one another and when placed next to one another tell an undeniable testimony that God works like a skilled writer and detailed film director in our very own lives!

So here's to new awakenings and discoveries every day, and of course, keeping my pen and paper close by ;)
