Interview with Dear Rae

* Dear Rae *
jewelery

"I look to create jewellery that celebrates the precious quality in our everyday lives. My jewellery reflects symbolic narratives that are inspired by memories and moments experienced in the nature and community of South Africa."
exert from Dear Rae website

Give us a brief overview of your latest range?

I did a series of thin silver rings. Some were grouped in 3's, some were round, some where square, some had trinkets.

How did you get into the jewellery industry?

My dad made silver jewellery as a hobbie. When I was about 10 years old, he taught me a few basic techniques. I have always loved creating 3D objects....so off I went to study jewellery. We will have to see what happens next...

What style influences & shape your designs?

I love patterns. Whimsical and naive illustrations inspire me. Fine structures in nature draw my attention. But most of the time I am inspired by spontaneous meetings of people or objects in the everyday life of South Africa.

What is the biggest compliment you’ve received regarding your work?

"I wear it everyday"

Tell us about your new studio space?

It is in a lofty room...light wooden floors...fun flags...lots of boxes and drawers...a joyful space with everything I need to create....I feel priviledged

Where can we purchase your work?

LIM, misfits, blink , @ddress and www.dearrae.co.za

Next series of work you’re working on?

Beautifully understated jewellery, that is so comfortable, you forget that you are wearing it.

Long term goal with your jewellery?

I would love to train, employ and empower people...It will be a great day when Dear Rae grows big enough to support this dream.

How do you feel about South African design industry?

an exciting and colourful explosion waiting to happen

Describe your ultimate Cape Town day?

Hot summers day...a surf in the morning at muizies, a well deserved breakfast in the sun, a visit to the woodstock market, fresh bread and great toppings for lunch in the garden, a sunbath and snooze on the beach, a shockingly cold dip in the ocean, drinks as the sun goes down and out to town for a bit of a dance with my cray.
