Rock of Ages

True to the lyrics of the song, these words remain as powerful and relevant to us now as what they were 300 years ago.

Reading or singing a song that has passed through history, countries, wars, celebrations and millions of lives for over 300 years, almost immediately takes me into a new dimension of awe and worship.

The song remains powerful outside of time; this resembles eternity for me. As though it were evidence from heaven.

Read the words, and may the words of 'old' inspire you a'new.

Rock of Ages.
Text: Augustus M. Toplady, 1740-1778
Music: Thomas Hastings, 1784-1872
  1. Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
    Let me hide myself in Thee;
    Let the water and the blood,
    From Thy wounded side which flowed,
    Be of sin the double cure,
    Save from wrath and make me pure.
  2. Not the labor of my hands
    Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
    Could my zeal no respite know,
    Could my tears forever flow,
    All for sin could not atone;
    Thou must save, and Thou alone.
  3. Nothing in my hand I bring,
    Simply to Thy cross I cling;
    Naked, come to Thee for dress;
    Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
    Foul, I to the fountain fly;
    Wash me, Savior, or I die.
  4. While I draw this fleeting breath,
    When my eyes shall close in death,
    When I rise to worlds unknown,
    And behold Thee on Thy throne,
    Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
    Let me hide myself in Thee.

  1. Greetings from Wordwise Hymns. Your quotation of Augustus Toplady's great hymn caught my eye because I posted an article on it myself this morning. Not quite 300 years old, though. It was first published 235 years ago. But your point is well taken. It's still loaded with important truth, and a needful message, today. God bless.
